Court sentences 3 Morsi supporters to death in absentia

Cairo criminal court, led by judge Nagy Shehta, sentenced three supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi to death for violence-related charges in Imbaba district during the fourth anniversary of the January 2011 uprising.

The convicted were charged with possessing weapons, ‘showing force,’ and belonging to a terrorist group.

During the fourth anniversary of the uprising, violence broke out in multiple districts in Cairo between security forces and protesters, which led to the death of over 20 people and the injury of over 100.

The verdict can only be appealed if those convicted turn themselves in.

Since Morsi’s ouster in July 2013, hundreds of his supporters have been rounded up, arrested, and given strict prison sentences as well as death sentences. Most of these sentences are being appealed.
