Daniel Ernst: US-Egypt Ties Don’t Have a Double Standard

In his interview with Al Shaab Yoreed talk show, Daniel Ernst, the U.S. Department of State’s Regional Deputy Spokesperson for the Middle East, said the United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton’s visit to Egypt in this time was necessary to emphasis on the U.S. support for the Egyptian 25th revolution and to assert on the strength of Egyptian-US relations, especially that Egypt is always seen as an important and a key player in the Arab region, believing that only Egyptian people have the right to decide their fate. “US delegation was concerned to meet with all authorities in the country to have a comprehensive view for the current scene,” He added.

Talking about continuous protests denouncing the unaccepted US interfering, Ernst affirmed that peaceful demonstrations are natural acts for democratic countries like Egypt because people should learn how to express their opinion. He affirmed that United States never interfered in the Egyptian affairs, and we are supporting the elected Egyptian government delivered by the people revolt, adding that United States never supported Muslim Brotherhood in the elections, as what rumored.

On Some allegations that US intends to divide Egypt, Ernst pointed out that in any country, there are different views of various communities and multiple categories, but the most important thing to establish an useful dialogue between all parties, adding that is the greatest mistake for any party is to withdraw from a national dialogue.

As I said, the United States does not support any specific party, Our policy toward Egypt has never changed as no one can speculate how next days will change the current situation, we also have relations with all countries of the world where some different point of views may arise, but those differences are always in respect for human rights and people’s interest.

Egypt-Iran Relations

Egypt is an important player in the region and has the ability to have relations with any country in the world, but unfortunately, Iran doesn’t show any positive intentions in the region, proving that it is not supporting the idea of stability in the region; these trends affect all the related parties, although it’s up to Egyptian government whether to enhance its relationship with Iran or not.

Ernst added that Iran is supporting terrorist groups that spread terror in the region and has to prove its readiness for a comprehensive dialogue and a positive and effective role in the region.
