Procedures for demolishing two extension buildings which were the headquarters of the former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which former president Hosni Mubarak belonged to, began Sunday in Tahrir Square.
In April 2015, the Egyptian cabinet approved demolishing the main downtown headquarters of the NDP.
The cabinet announced in March 2014 that the headquarters would be demolished and the space given to the adjoining garden and buildings of the Egyptian Museum.
The NDP headquarters was torched 28 January 2011 during mass protests demanding the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak was forced to step down 11 February 2011. He has since been on trial for several charges, including the killing of peaceful protesters, but has been acquitted of most of them.
The NDP was dissolved by court order in April 2011 and its assets seized by the state.
