Drive-By Shooting Kills Policeman On Egypt Highway

A drive-by shooting on Tuesday killed 21-year-old police cadet Ramadan Ibrahim, who was manning a checkpoint on the Cairo-Ismailia highway at the time of the attack.

Additional police personnel were injured in the shooting, including 21-year-old Ahmed Hussein, who is in critical condition after being shot in the right calf, Al-Ahram’s Arabic website reported.

Mohamed Awad Kamal, 32, was shot in the right hand and on the left side of his torso.

The armed assailants fired from a car without license plates, randomly spraying the checkpoint with bullets.

Al-Ahram’s Arabic website reported that the perpetrators are likely to have committed similar crimes against police and army personnel. Security forces have been scrutinising the area to indentify the shooters, who remain at large.

Attacks on security personnel across Egypt have notably increased since the deadly August crackdown on two massive Islamist sit-ins in Cairo and Giza, which left hundreds killed.

The sit-ins were calling for the reinstatement of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power by the military on 3 July following nationwide protests against him.

Alleged Islamists supporting the former president are usually the ones accused of committing the ongoing attacks on police.
