EDF revises France’s nuclear output forecast for 2024

Electricité de France (EDF) said on Wednesday that it had increased its 2024 nuclear output forecast to 358–364 terawatt-hours (TWh), up from its previous estimate of 340–360 TWh, citing progress in plant maintenance and pipe repairs.

The utility has improved the availability of its 56 reactors, following disruptions caused by corrosion issues over the past two years. This enhanced output from France’s nuclear fleet, a cornerstone of Europe’s power system, is helping stabilise wholesale electricity prices.

France is on track for record power exports this year, driven by rising nuclear production, strong hydropower supported by heavy rains, and reduced domestic demand. This contrasts with 2022, when prolonged reactor outages made the country a net power importer for the first time since 1980.

EDF’s nuclear capacity may further increase soon as it prepares to connect the 1.6-gigawatt European Pressurised Reactor at Flamanville, adding to its already significant contribution to national energy production.
