Egypt, AstraZeneca sign liver cancer MoU

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population signed on Sunday a memorandum of understanding with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, launching a pioneering initiative for the early detection and treatment of liver cancer across Egypt.

This initiative uses advanced AI technologies and introduces modern treatment methods for liver cancer. It includes a two-year MoU for a wide-ranging awareness campaign, covering field activities and social media, with the goal of educating over 30 million citizens about liver cancer and the importance of early diagnosis.

The initiative will launch a specialized training program for medical teams, partnering with international cancer centers. This reflects AstraZeneca Egypt’s strategic commitment to strengthen Egypt’s healthcare program, considering the significant impact of liver cancer, with more than 27,000 new cases and over 26,000 deaths annually.

“Egypt has emerged as a global leader in the difficult and long journey towards eliminating the hepatitis C virus,” remarked Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population.

He emphasised Egypt’s ongoing commitment to combating liver cancer, with this partnership being a key move aiming to enhance diagnostics, apply advanced treatments, and offer patient care to save lives and improve the health of those affected by the disease.
