Egypt, BP to add 80 MMcf/d of gas from Mediterranean Fayoum North-4 well

Egypt’s petroleum sector, in cooperation with BP, is preparing to bring the Mediterranean Fayoum North-4 well on stream in the near future with an estimated production rate of around 80 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas, following the successful execution of a well sidetrack.

The project is part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy to increase domestic natural gas production, maximise the use of existing infrastructure, and reduce reliance on imports.

The new well sidetrack was carried out under BP’s drilling programme to boost gas production in Egypt, enabling the well to resume production from new reservoirs without the need to drill a separate well. The approach is intended to maximise the utilisation of existing wells and production facilities while adding new output in a short timeframe and at lower cost.

Technical teams also overcame challenges associated with reactivating the well and completed all operations in line with the highest safety and efficiency standards. They reached the target reservoirs at depths exceeding 3,000 metres, paving the way for production to begin and adding new natural gas volumes to support local demand, reduce the import bill, and strengthen Egypt’s energy security.
