Egypt cancels construction of 200 MW solar PV flagship

Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) decided to cancel a recently launched tender for the construction of a 200 MW solar PV flagship in the West Nile region of Egypt.

Egypt had reached surplus electricity in a context of low electricity demand.

However, it hasn’t cancelled the tender for 600 MW of projects that will be developed in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in the West Nile region.

13 companies qualified for the 200 MW solar project, including Masdar, ACWA Power, First Solar and Orascom Construction.

In December 2019 EDF Renewables and El Sewedy Electric commissioned two 65 MW solar PV projects in Benban, in the Aswan province of southern Egypt.

The projects are part of the larger Benban solar complex, which is expected to reach a total capacity of 1,800 MW. This additional solar capacity should help the Egyptian government meet its target of 20 percent of renewable power generation by 2020.
