Egypt committed to pharmaceutical self-sufficiency in Africa

The Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), Ali El-Ghamrawy, on Wednesday reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to supporting regional initiatives aimed at enhancing pharmaceutical self-sufficiency in Africa, as per an Egyptian Cabinet statement on Wednesday.

Addressing the 2nd Vaccine and Other Health Products Manufacturing Forum for African Union Member States, El-Ghamrawy highlighted the importance of integration among member states to ensure the availability of safe and effective vaccines and healthcare products, contributing to improved healthcare access and strengthened local manufacturing capabilities across the continent.

The forum focused on the importance of launching the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM), aimed at coordinating the procurement of vaccines and healthcare products among African Union member states to ensure their availability at competitive prices and promote equitable access across all member countries.

Participants discussed the challenges facing implementation, ways to enhance cooperation among member states, and the role of the Egyptian Drug Authority in providing regulatory support to ensure the quality and safety of healthcare products in Africa.
