Egypt hails Belgian ban on Israeli settlement goods, urges wider EU action

Egypt welcomed Belgium’s decision to ban imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, urging other European Union member states to adopt similar measures.

In a statement on Sunday, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry described the decision as an important step towards upholding international law and reinforcing the principles of justice.

The ministry said the measure reflects international legal obligations, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which states that Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories have no legal validity and calls for an immediate halt to settlement activities.

Egypt urged other European Union member states and the wider international community to adopt similar legal measures banning imports from Israeli settlements.

The ministry reiterated Egypt’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, saying lasting peace and security in the Middle East can only be achieved by ending the Israeli occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination.

It reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
