Egypt invests EGP 25b in solid waste management Since 2019
The Egyptian government has invested 25 billion Egyptian pounds ($513.2 million) in solid waste management and environmental improvement projects since 2019, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at a workshop organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Awad highlighted the positive outcomes of these investments. Collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Environment and other partners have resulted in the removal of approximately 6 million tons of waste and the establishment of 14 mobile intermediate stations. Plans are in place to expand this network to 34 stations by 2027.
In addition, the government has created 11 fixed intermediate stations and nine new waste processing and recycling lines. These facilities are expected to be further expanded in the coming years. To ensure safe and responsible waste disposal, 26 sanitary landfills have been established, with a goal of reaching 46 by 2027.
Recognising the importance of sustainable environmental management, the Ministry of Local Development has allocated 2.8 billion pounds for environmental investments in the current fiscal year. The government is also prioritising the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme within the integrated waste management system. EPR will play a crucial role in promoting sustainability and creating job opportunities in the sector.
