Egypt aims to increase grain silo storage capacity to 6 million tons by 2030, up from 4.4 million tons in 2026, Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk said during a Senate plenary session on Tuesday.
Farouk said strategic reserves of essential commodities cover approximately six months of consumption on average. At the same time, local wheat procurement reached around 5 million tons during the 2026 season, up from more than 4 million tons in 2025. The ministry targets a 20 per cent annual increase in local procurement to achieve self-sufficiency in subsidised wheat by 2030.
The ministry relies on around 40,000 distribution outlets and 30,000 subsidised bakeries to supply more than 30 essential commodities to approximately 57.5 million beneficiaries monthly. It is also implementing the national Carry On project to modernise outlets and improve distribution efficiency.
To curb rising prices, the ministry aims to offer 30 essential commodities at discounts of up to 25 per cent. The initiative has covered 190 districts through 284 outlets, while nearly 600 one-day markets have opened in three phases. The ministry is also deploying 267 mobile sales vehicles to underserved areas.
Farouk said market monitoring campaigns cover mills, bakeries, commodity outlets, markets, fuel stations and butane gas depots. The ministry is also using digital tools to track prices and complaints and developing a mechanism to link wholesale and retail prices to identify and address unjustified increases.
