Egypt to inaugurate a new €1.3bln metro system in Alexandria

Egypt will inaugurate a new metro system in its coastal city, Alexandria that would stand at approximately EUR1.3 billion($1.7) with execution of the Orascom Construction, in collaboration with Colas Rail.

With the presence of the Egyptian Minister of Transportation, Kamel Al-Wazir, the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed a EUR1.3 billion deal with the Orascom Construction and Colas Rail consortium to execute a 20 stations metro system. The new metro will link downtown of the Egyptian Mediterranean city with its northeastern town of Abu Qir.

The project’s route extends for a length of 21.7 km from Abu Qir railway station to Misr station in Alexandria. It includes 20 stations, where 5 new stations will be added, namely: Miami – Mohamed Naguib – Kafr Abdo – Sporting – Bab Sharq. The commercial speed is 80 km/h.

The project is constructed with funding sources from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), L’Agence française de développement (AFD), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
