Egypt, UNDP review progress on environmental projects

Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, held a meeting with UNDP Resident Representative Alessandro Fracassetti to review ongoing and future joint projects and assess progress in their collaboration.

Fouad highlighted that UNDP is a strategic partner for Egypt in implementing plans, strategies, and projects, including updating the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Egypt is set to present its third update this year, incorporating the link between climate change and biodiversity. This update will emphasise nature-based solutions and biodiversity conservation, enhancing alignment with the three Rio Conventions.

The minister also commended UNDP’s support in preparing Egypt’s First Biennial Transparency Report (1BTR) with funding from the Global Environment Facility, noting that this collaboration will further strengthen the NDC update process.

Discussions included upcoming projects, such as launching a Red Sea coral reef protection initiative to address climate change impacts, coordinating with the Green Climate Fund for the second phase of the Nile Delta and North Coast integrated coastal zone management project, and advancing the Transforming Financial Systems for Climate (TFSC) project.

Additionally, preparations for Egypt’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) are underway, with a draft expected in the coming months, followed by national consultations.
