Egypt has been elected as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), representing the Middle East, for the 2023-2027 period, as per an Egyptian Cabinet statement on Thursday.

The election took place during the 51st meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Middle East, held in Doha, Qatar. Egypt’s Minister of Tourism, Sherif Fathy, attended the meeting, which was chaired by Jordan.

Discussions at the meeting focused on regional cooperation initiatives, the implementation of the 2024/2025 work programme, and training programmes utilising technology and artificial intelligence.

Minister Fathy expressed his gratitude for the Arab consensus that led to Egypt’s election and emphasised the importance of regional cooperation. While in Doha, he also met with Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism, to discuss strengthening tourism collaboration between the two countries.
