Egyptian MP Mostafa Bakry steps down from pro-state majority bloc

Egyptian parliamentarian Mostafa Bakry resigned from the membership of the majority bloc In Support of Egypt on Tuesday without providing reasons, according to local media reports.

“I wish the coalition success in the framework of the national constituents and working for the sake of the people and for the protection of Egypt’s state institutions,” Bakry said in his resignation letter, which was circulated by local news outlets.

Although the pro-state journalist did not cite any reason behind his decision, he experienced tension earlier this month with coalition leaders, most notably its head Sameh Seif El-Yazel.

El-Yazel formerly led the pro-state electoral alliance For the Love of Egypt, which clinched the whole 120 seats allocated for the party based list system in Egypt’s new parliament.

Bakry, who used to be an influential member of For the Love of Egypt, was willing to run for the deputy-speaker position in the parliament. El-Yazal said, however, that if Bakry took the post he would no longer be a member of the alliance.

In Support of Egypt is comprised of nearly 380 parliamentarians who are mainly independents. The bloc aims to support President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s policies in the parliament.
