Egypt’s Amr Salama joins jury at Emmy International Awards

Egyptian director and screenwriter, Amr Salama, has been appointed as a jury member for the Emmy International Awards, he said on Instagram on Monday.

Salama is known for his compelling works tackling sensitive subjects.

His career began in 2008 when he directed the then hit movie Zay El Naharda (On a Day Like Today).

His debut film is a critically acclaimed movie praised for exploring the complexities of the Egyptian society.

He then released Asmaa in 2011 starring Tunisian actress Hend Sabri, shedding light on the stigma individuals living with HIV/AIDS face in Egypt.

In 2017, he released Sheikh Jackson and it was chosen to be Egypt’s official submission to the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

The movie told the story of a conservative Muslim cleric and who is constantly battling his love for Michael Jackson’s music.

Salama is also known for his adaptation of Ahmed Khaled Tawfik’s novel series, Paranormal, which was the first Egyptian Netflix Original series.

Salama will now join a group of industry professionals to review and assess submissions across various categories.
