Egypt’s home Internet usage jumps by 87% amid coronavirus curfew – report

Internet consumption in Egypt has remarkably increased, seeing high traffic during March and April due to the coronavirus outbreak restrictions that forced the majority of Egyptians to stay at home.
According to a report by the Egyptian National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), the home Internet usage jumped by 87 percent, while mobile Internet usage soared 18 percent. Web browsing also climbed by 131 percent.
In addition, international voice calls rose by 15 percent and local voice calls by three percent, the report added.
The usage of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp applications went up by 151, 59, and 34 percent, respectively.
The rate of online game applications used on the internet also surged by 96 percent, NTRA report said.

The rate of browsing the websites of the ministries education, technical education as well as higher education and scientific research increased by 376.4 percent in the second week of April, compared to the same period in March, the report added.
