Egypt’s Interior Strikes ‘One of the Most Dangerous Terrorist Cells’

Egypt’s interior ministry said it concluded on Wednesday several preemptive strikes against “one the most dangerous terrorist cells,” a statement on the ministry’s Facebook account read.

Three members of the cell were apprehended by the police. The location of their apprehension was not disclosed.

The cell has been recruiting members to carry out attacks against Egyptians, houses of worship, vital state institutions as well as army and police personnel, the statement read.

According to the statement, the police’s raids included the cell’s laboratory to manufacture explosive devices as well the group’s storage, where weapons were kept.

Improvised explosive devices, Molotov cocktails, cars, motorcycles and army uniforms were confiscated.

The statement also said police arrested 22 members of a “terrorist cell” in Sharqiya governorate, who have set fire to and destroyed a number of electricity pylons.

Police and army personnel have been the target of militant attacks since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, which spiked after the bloody dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins the following August. Over 500 police and army troops have been killed since the insurgency began.
