Egypt’s manufacturing, extractive industries index falls 4.3% in May

Egypt’s industrial production index for manufacturing and extractive industries, excluding crude oil and petroleum products, fell 4.3 per cent in May from the previous month, preliminary data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed on Thursday.

The index declined to 130.02 points in May from 135.79 points in April, according to CAPMAS.

Output in other mining and quarrying activities rose 9.48 per cent to 184.44 points from 168.47 points, supported by higher exports, the agency said.

Production of chemicals and chemical products increased 10.74 per cent to 143.96 points from 130.00 points, driven by higher output of fertilisers and paints.

Meanwhile, the food products index fell 10.81 per cent to 139.62 points from 156.54 points as some agricultural processing seasons came to an end, according to CAPMAS.

The textiles index declined 10.28 per cent to 142.97 points from 159.36 points, reflecting prevailing supply and demand conditions in the market, the agency said.
