Egypt’s manufacturing, extractive output falls 9.6% in July – CAPMAS

Egypt’s manufacturing and extractive industries production index fell 9.6 per cent in July to 123.73 points, preliminary data from the country’s official statistics agency CAPMAS showed on Sunday.

The index, which excludes crude oil and petroleum products, declined from a final reading of 136.91 points in June, CAPMAS said.

The agency said the index uses 2012/2013 as its base year and has followed the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities, Revision 4 (ISIC Rev. 4), since January 2020. It also relies on a monthly producer price index based on the same period.

Among the sectors that recorded increases, the production index for leather and leather products rose 40.43 per cent in July to 51.25 points, up from 36.49 points in June, according to CAPMAS, which attributed the increase to market demand.

The paper and paper products index edged up 1.27 per cent to 75.54 points from 74.60, as manufacturers began preparing for the school season.

Electrical appliances recorded the steepest decline among the sectors highlighted, with the index falling 11.88 per cent to 70.74 points from 80.27, reflecting weaker demand.

The furniture production index fell 10.19 per cent to 193.57 points from 215.53, also reflecting lower demand.
