Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Osama Kamal, has headed this morning to Russia to resume talks over importing the Russian natural gas intended to pump the country’s power stations.
This comes as a part of a series of negotiations held by the Egyptian minister with a number of natural gas exporting countries seeking to avoid witnessing a blackout summer and fuel shortage.
Russia is a leading natural gas exporter and producer.
Meanwhile, the First Deputy at the Egyptian Oil Ministry Eng. Mahmoud Nazeem, has asserted that Egypt is now in dire need for importing the natural gas so as to fill the growing demands of both the citizens and the power stations.
Nazeem referred that the coming phase will witness excessive gas consumption, which in return requires taking multiple actions by the officials before going through a new fuel shortage crisis.
Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has discussed an energy relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS forum in South Africa.
The Egyptian president has showed his country’s interest in exploring a natural gas relationship with Russia.
Egypt, since its 2011 revolution, has suffered energy shortages. In November, the government said it was inviting investors to help develop its refinery sector. Domestic production hasn’t kept up with demand since the revolution and Egypt may become a net natural gas importer for the first time.ؤ
