Egypt’s PM reviews strategic food reserves, market supply measures
Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly reviewed the availability of strategic food reserves and measures to stabilise domestic markets on Tuesday, as authorities seek to maintain adequate supplies of essential commodities and contain food prices.
Madbouly chaired a meeting with ministers responsible for supply, agriculture, industry, and other relevant sectors to assess strategic commodity stocks and ensure sufficient supplies are available nationwide at affordable prices, according to a Cabinet statement.
Madbouly said the government remained committed to maintaining strategic reserves capable of covering extended periods, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to strengthen food security and ensure the continued availability of essential goods.
Cabinet spokesman Mohamed El-Homsani said the meeting reviewed coordination among government agencies to maintain strategic commodity supplies, stabilise markets, and support balanced prices.
The officials said government-operated fixed and mobile retail outlets had helped increase the availability of essential goods at competitive prices, contributing to lower prices for several commodities.
The meeting also reviewed measures to secure raw materials for the food processing industry, encourage investment, expand domestic production, and strengthen partnerships with the private sector to improve self-sufficiency in strategic commodities.
The officials agreed to intensify inspections of markets and bakeries to ensure compliance with official prices and product quality standards, while stepping up enforcement against price manipulation and other market violations, the Cabinet said.
