Egyptian sports minister refers ‘blind athletes’ case to prosecution

Egypt’s sports minister Khaled Abdel-Aziz has referred 16 disability sports officials to the general prosecution amid investigation of corruption in the registration of blind athletes in a goalball friendly tournament.

The prosecution will probe the registration of ineligible players at El-Eman club, who according to local reports were sighted.
Those players obtained the Schengen visa to participate in a friendly tournament in Poland last year. The club pulled out of the tournament but they still travelled and then vanished into thin air in Europe.

The 16 officials include former head of the Egyptian Blind Sport Association (EBSA) Ahmed Abdullah, three EBSA board members and El-Eman club Manager Mohamed Yousry Awad and all the club’s board members.

The case caused a social media storm, prompting minister Abdel-Aziz to order an investigation into what happened.
