Egypt’s wheat self-sufficiency rises in ’23

Egypt’s wheat self-sufficiency rate stood at 44.6 per cent in 2023, with per capita availability rising to 158.8 kg, up from 140.0 kg in 2022—an increase of 13.4 per cent, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported.

Meanwhile, rice recorded a 95.0 per cent self-sufficiency rate, with per capita availability at 27.5 kg, compared to 26.9 kg in 2022, marking a 2.2 per cent increase, according to the report.

The report also highlighted that the self-sufficiency rate for vegetables reached 105.4 per cent, with per capita availability climbing to 83.7 kg, up from 78.7 kg in 2022, reflecting a 6.4 per cent rise.

In the fruit sector, the self-sufficiency rate was 106.8 per cent in 2023, with per capita availability slightly declining to 65.0 kg, compared to 65.3 kg in 2022—a 0.5 per cent decrease, the report added.

Furthermore, red meat had a self-sufficiency rate of 69.4 per cent, with per capita availability increasing to 7.9 kg, up from 7.3 kg in 2022, showing an 8.2 per cent rise, attributed to a 20.1 per cent increase in local meat production.
