President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has congratulated Ahly football club for winning its first victory in the CAF Confederation Cup final on Saturday.
In an exciting match, attended by tens of thousands of Ahly fans, veteran striker Emad Meteb scored a goal deep into stoppage time, giving Ahly a 1-0 home victory over Sewe Sport.
By winning the cup – Africa’s secondary club competition – Ahly claimed the only continental title missing in their trophy-laden history.
El-Sisi commended Ahly’s “high spirit” and also praised its fans for “standing by their team.”
About 25,000 fans Ahly fans were allowed to attend the match at the Cairo Stadium, a first since February.
Ultras Ahlawy, Ahly’s hardcore fan group, has locked horns with security forces numerous times since the January 2011.
On Saturday, police removed about two thousand fans it said had stormed the stadium ahead of the match.
