EU pushes for AI factories to enhance AI competitiveness
The European Union (EU) has launched a call to establish AI factories, aimed at strengthening Europe’s leadership in trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI).
These AI factories will leverage the EU’s network of high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers, providing resources to startups, researchers, and industry. The initiative, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen, aims to position Europe as a global leader in AI innovation.
The AI factories will enable AI developers to train generative AI models using EuroHPC supercomputers, offering data, computing, and storage services.
They will support sectors like healthcare, energy, defence, and manufacturing. Backed by close to €1 billion from the EU’s Digital Europe Programme and Horizon Europe, with matching funds from Member States, the call will remain open until December 2025.
