Germany’s Merkel negative for coronavirus first test, more to undergo: spokesman
An initial test for coronavirus has come back negative for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a government spokesman announced on Monday, saying that she would undergo further tests.
“The test was negative,” the government spokesman said. “Further tests will follow.”
Merkel, 65, went into self-quarantine on Sunday after being into contact with an infected doctor.
Her chief of staff said the chancellor had only had brief contact with the doctor who later tested positive for coronavirus.
German Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz said earlier on Monday that the German chancellor was healthy but working from home.
On Friday afternoon, Merkel received a vaccine shot against pneumococcus, a pneumonia-causing bacteria, from the doctor and she went into quarantine after being informed of his positive test result.
