Grand Egyptian Museum draws nearly 4 million visitors since November opening

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has received about 4 million visitors since its official opening in November 2025 through the end of August, Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Ministry said on Tuesday.

Visitor numbers have started to increase with the beginning of the new tourism season, the ministry said.

The figures were reviewed during a meeting of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority’s board, chaired by Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation.

Ahmed Ghoneim, chief executive of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, presented an overview of the museum’s activities and events in recent months, including visits by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month.

The board also reviewed the museum’s total revenues since its official opening.

It approved the authority’s financial statements and amended final accounts for the 2025/26 fiscal year.

The board also approved a French donation of humidity-monitoring equipment for the museum’s galleries under an Egyptian-French archaeological cooperation programme.

The equipment will support preventive conservation by monitoring and recording environmental conditions around the museum’s archaeological collections, the ministry said.

The board was also briefed on memorandums of understanding being prepared with international universities and archaeological museums to strengthen cooperation in research and cultural heritage.
