A hand grenade exploded on Saturday on the Arish-Rafah highway in Sinai, and a second grenade was detonated by security forces in a controlled explosion, reported Al-Ahram’s Arabic website.
There were no reported casualties.
Security sources said that unknown persons had planted the grenade in the Matala area of Rafah on the Arish-Rafah road, which is frequented by military trucks, but it exploded before military trucks approached.
The rest of the area was searched for further explosives.
Militant attacks in Sinai have escalated since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July. More than 500 security personnel have been killed in militant attacks countrywide since the ouster.
