Holy month of Ramadan to start in Egypt on Friday
Tomorrow marks the first day of Ramadan in Egypt – the most spiritual month in the Muslim calendar – according to the Islamic Dar Al-Iftaa.
Dar Al-Iftaa observed the crescent moon of the holy month on Wednesday. Typically, the religious authority would announce the result in a celebration; however, this year’s celebration was cancelled over the coronavirus.
Muslims around the world abstain from eating and drinking from dawn till dusk during the holy month.
Ramadan begins during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, the month in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
The month lasts 29–30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon, according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths
In recent years, Ramadan has moved into the summer months, bringing longer days and sweltering heat for many countries, especially in the Middle East.
