Mansour, Tianneng sign pact to explore battery production in Egypt
Egypt’s Mansour Group and China’s Tianneng Battery signed a memorandum of understanding to explore battery manufacturing and energy-storage investments in Egypt, as the country seeks to build a local supply chain for new-energy vehicles, the Investment Ministry said Wednesday.
The companies will assess production of lead-acid batteries for vehicles and lithium batteries for new-energy vehicles, Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid said at the signing ceremony.
“Localising lithium batteries and components for new-energy vehicles is a key part of Egypt’s strategy to deepen manufacturing and increase value added and exports,” Farid said.
The proposed partnership would give Mansour and Egypt access to Tianneng’s battery technology and expertise, while supporting the development of industries serving the new-energy vehicle market, he said.
“Lithium batteries and new-energy vehicles are central to Egypt’s bet on deeper domestic manufacturing,” Farid said.
The companies are evaluating potential sites in Egypt and determining which products could be manufactured locally as they prepare a feasibility study, Eric Hai Xu, Vice President of Tianneng Holding Group, said.
No investment value, production capacity, or implementation timeline has been announced.
Tianneng has about 40 years of experience in battery manufacturing, including automotive batteries, mobility equipment, battery recycling and energy-storage solutions, Xu said. The company produces lead, lithium, sodium-ion and solid-state batteries and is China’s largest producer of lead-acid batteries, he said.
Xu said Tianneng was interested in working with Mansour Group and assessing opportunities in Egypt, citing the country’s domestic market and regional position.
The Egyptian government will support the companies during the feasibility stage by helping identify suitable industrial sites and facilitating land allocation once a final location is selected, Farid said.
The companies and relevant government agencies will continue discussions on site selection, the product mix and other feasibility requirements before moving to implementation, the investment ministry said.
