Mexico’s Pemex agrees to transfer control of gas project to Grupo Carso

Mexican state oil firm Pemex has reached an agreement to transfer control of its Lakach natural gas project in the Gulf of Mexico to Grupo Carso, a company owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, according to Reuters citing a report by El Heraldo columnist Dario Celis.

Celis did not disclose the sources of this information, and neither Pemex nor Slim’s representatives have immediately responded to requests for comment.

Last month, Reuters reported that Pemex and Slim’s team were in discussions to revive the development of the Lakach field, which is Mexico’s first deepwater natural gas project and has faced setbacks in the past.

Pemex views finding a new partner as crucial to advancing the field’s development, especially after US liquefied natural gas company New Fortress Energy withdrew from the project last year. The Lakach field is seen as a promising opportunity to explore Mexico’s deepwater natural gas potential.
