Nestlé to invest $1.01billion to renews coffee sustainability plan amid climate challenges

Food giant Nestlé has pledged on Tuesday to spend more than one billion Swiss francs ($1.01 billion) by 2030 on efforts to get coffee sustainably, more than double the company’s previous pledge.

There is a series of studies had showed that by 2050 half of the land currently used to grow coffee, could be unproductive due to rising temperatures, drought and disease.

Nestlé aims to grow 20 percent of its coffee using renewable agricultural practices, which include growing cover crops to protect the soil, using organic fertilizers to improve soil fertility.

Moreover, it will increase intercropping usage to conserve biodiversity, as these practices with the goal based on halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The company is committed to support farmers who bear the risks and costs associated with transitioning to regenerative agriculture, according Nestlé’s statement about its plan to double spending on sustainable coffee sources.

In addition to that the company will provide programs aimed at helping them improve their incomes.
