New Candidate Symbols On Egypt Election Forms

There will be five new candidate symbols on voting forms in the presidential election, bringing the total to 15, state news agency MENA reported.

The campaign team of leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi filed a request to the election committee for an eagle symbol to be added — the same symbol he used in the 2012 presidential election.

Committee general-secretary Abdelaziz Salman confirmed to Al-Ahram Arabic news website that the addition of the eagle symbol came after Sabahi’s request. “However, this does not mean it is reserved for Sabahi,” he added.

“We told [Sabahi] that El-Sisi can still have it, Sabahi didn’t object.”

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi will have first choice of his voting symbol because he was the first to register his candidacy.

The other four new symbols are a watch, plane, telephone, and eyeglasses.

The old symbols include a lion, horse, sun, star, palm tree, and umbrella.

Sabahi and El-Sisi are the only two hopefuls to apply to stand, before the official registration period ended on 20 April.

The election committee will issue the final list of candidates on 2 May, after reviewing any objections.

The election will be held on 26 and 27 May.
