OpenAI mulls banning AI tools in China
OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI language model ChatGPT, is reportedly planning to restrict access to its development tools for entities in China and potentially other countries, according to a report on Tuesday by Chinese state media.
While ChatGPT itself is unavailable in mainland China, the report highlights that many Chinese startups have been using OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) to build their own AI applications.
Chinese users of the platform have been notified via email since late Monday that they are in a region not supported by OpenAI. Additional measures to block API traffic from certain regions will be implemented starting July 9.
The report mentions that numerous Chinese companies have launched chatbots powered by their own AI models in the past year.
