Police Disperse Pro-Morsi Protests In Matareya And Alexandria

Clashes erupted between dozens of pro-Morsi supporters and security forces in Cairo’s restive district of Matareya on Friday afternoon, the state news agency MENA reported.

According to a MENA reporter in the Cairo district, dozens of pro-Morsi supporters gathered on its main street, Horreya Street, after Friday prayers and began to protest, before clashes erupted between them and security forces.

The police used tear gas to disperse the protest, after protesters began to hurl fireworks at them, he reported. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Previous clashes between pro-Morsi supporters and security forces in Matareya on 25 January resulted in the death of 12 people, and sparked unrest for several days in the Cairo district.

Also on Friday, in Alexandria, police dispersed a pro-Morsi march in the area of El-Raml, in east Alexandria, according to the Ahram Arabic news website. They arrested three protesters from the march, accusing them of distributing anti-state flyers.

A source inside Alexandria’s security directorate told Ahram Arabic that dozens of pro-Morsi supporters had participated in the march, blocking traffic in El-Raml, and had attacked private and public properties.
