Pro-Morsi Marches In Luxor Follow El-Sisi’s Call For Friday Demos

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, a Muslim Brotherhood-led coalition, organised marches on Wednesday in Luxor calling for the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, Ahram’s Arabic website reported.

The protest included dozens of cars and motorcycles, and chants calling for “legitimacy” and the return of the “elected president” by passengers with microphones.

The demonstrations come after military chief Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for Egyptians to gather in the streets on Friday to show their consent for the military to confront “violence and terrorism.”

Pro-Morsi marchers in Luxor also chanted against what they described as a “bloody military coup”, in reference to the ouster of Morsi on 3 July by the military.

Several demonstrations took place across different Egyptian governorates to condemn El-Sisi’s Wednesday statements. Military spokesman Ahmed Ali issued a later statement on Wednesday saying that El-Sisi’s speech was not aimed at any particular group as “some public personalities have claimed in the media.”

El-Sisi’s call for mass action were made after several weeks of deadly clashes between supporters and opponents of former president Morsi in a number of locations nationwide, including Cairo and Alexandria.
