Public-private partnerships vital for Egypt’s healthcare – minister

Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, underscored the vital role of public-private partnerships in enhancing the country’s healthcare system, according to the Cabinet’s statement.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Egyptian Lebanese Businessmen Association (ELBA), titled “The Importance of Public-Private Partnership in Developing the Healthcare Sector,” Abdel Ghaffar outlined key initiatives to improve healthcare services for citizens.

The minister emphasised the localisation of pharmaceutical production as a strategic priority and a lucrative investment opportunity, commending the Egyptian pharmaceutical industry for meeting 90 per cent of the country’s drug needs, ensuring drug security, and bolstering resilience to health challenges.

Abdel Ghaffar called for further expansion of local pharmaceutical manufacturing, including biologics, and the exploration of new markets in Africa.

The minister further highlighted the ongoing expansion of the Comprehensive Health Insurance System, with the first phase, covering six governorates, now serves six million citizens. The second phase targets five additional governorates—Damietta, Matrouh, Kafr El-Sheikh, North Sinai, and Minya—aiming to benefit 12 million more people.

The ministry is also establishing accredited healthcare facilities in governorates not included in the initial phases to deliver high-quality services, with private sector involvement in all phases.
