South Korea’s online shopping grew by 5.4 percent in July compared to the same month last year, driven by solid demand for food, car accessories, and mobile devices, according to data released Monday by Statistics Korea.
Online shopping transactions reached 19.96 trillion won ($14.9 billion) in July. The growth was supported by a 14.6 percent rise in online food and beverage purchases and a 15.7 percent rise in demand for agricultural, livestock, and fishery products.
Purchases of car accessories and mobile devices saw a significant surge, climbing more than 40 percent. Online transactions for daily necessities rose by 11.1 percent, while food delivery services saw an 8.9 percent increase.
Mobile shopping through smartphones expanded 6.9 per cent year-on-year to 15.12 trillion won ($11.3 billion) in July, making up 75.7 per cent of the total online shopping volume.
