Shell to use AI tech in deep sea oil exploration

Shell will use AI technology from SparkCognition in deep sea exploration to enhance offshore oil output, the companies announced on Wednesday.

SparkCognition’s AI will be used to process and analyze huge amounts of seismic data in the search for new oil reservoirs by Shell.

Shell is the largest oil producer in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, and SparkCognition is one of the biggest data analytics firms.

“We are committed to finding new and innovative ways to reinvent our exploration ways of working,” said Shell’s vice president of innovation and performance, Gabriel Guerra.

The companies said that their goal is to enhance operational efficiency and speed while also increasing production and success in the field of oil exploration.

“Generative AI for seismic imaging can positively disrupt the exploration process and has broad and far-reaching implications,” said chief science officer for SparkCognition in Texas, Bruce Porter.

The new technology uses less seismic data scans than usual which according to the companies will help with deep sea preservation.

They also said that fewer seismic surveys increase exploration workflow as well as save costs in high-performance computing.
