Sisi honours Egypt’s medal-winning Mediterranean Games team

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday honoured a number of medal-winning Egyptian athletes following an impressive performance in this year’s Mediterranean Games.

In an official statement, El-Sisi’s spokesman Bassam Rady said the president had received the winning athletes who had participated in the games, which were held in Spain from 22 June to 1 July.

The Egyptian delegation, constituting of around 170 athletes, won 45 medals, including 18 golds, 11 silvers, and 16 bronzes, and coming fifth in the medal rankings.

El-Sisi granted medals to the Egyptian delegation during a ceremony in Cairo on Tuesday which was attended by the athletes, their training team, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy, and the head of the Egyptian Olympic Committee Hesham Hatab.

According to Rady, El-Sisi praised the athletes’ accomplishments at the games, saying that they had lived up to Egypt’s good name in international sports events.

The president added that the state had not spared any efforts to provide all means of support to Egyptian sportsmen and women, expressing his aspiration for more efforts by athletes to accomplish further achievements that would boost Egypt’s status regionally and internationally.

The Mediterranean Games include basketball, volleyball, boxing, equestrian, handball, judo, cycling, rowing, water polo, weightlifting, shooting, swimming and gymnastics events.
