Telecom Egypt attracts 1 million subscribers to its 4G network in one month

Telecom Egypt has signed one million subscribers across the country to its 4G network in one month, the company announced Sunday.

The company, which has a monopoly on landlines in Egypt, has officially launched in September “WE”, the country’s long-awaited fourth mobile network.

Telecom Egypt was the first company to buy a 4G licence from the government in August for 7.08 billion Egyptian pounds ($392 million) to enter the mobile market directly.

The fourth mobile network is also available with the technologies of 2G and 3G, and 4G experimentally.

There are three other mobile service providers in Egypt: Orange, Vodafone, and Etisalat. The three mobile operators also began to provide 4G services. Orange and Etisalat received 10 MHz of frequency bands for the 4G services, while Vodafone received 5 MHz.

“We are looking forward to keeping on attracting more subscribers in the coming period.” Telecom Egypt’s chief executive Ahmed El Beheiry said in a company statement.

The number of mobile subscribers in Egypt declined to 99.5 million in August, down from 99.86 million in July, according to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s latest report.

Vodafone was able to attract 103,000 new subscribers, raising the client base count from 42.2 million in July to 42.3 million in August. Orange was the company with the biggest loss in its customer base, with 400,000 clients leaving the company in August, dropping its subscribers from 33.4 million in July to 33 million in August. Etisalat also lost 100,000 customers, going down from 24.1 million in July to 24 million in August.
