The Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Gold

Give those guys at Linde Werdelin a big lump of expensive metal and you can be sure that you won’t get it back the way you gave it. They can’t resist getting their hands on something new to challenge themselves with, and indeed it would seem that they recently got their hands on a nice delivery of 100 square blocks of 18Kt rose gold and then locked themselves away in their space age workshop with a six pack of Red Bull and started to fiddle with gold and some exotic tools. Perhaps Morten and Jorn have got something quite sober, classic, dare we imagine even understated in mind, considering the typical use of this noble, soft metal?

Joking, right? Of course. These fortunate solid gold blocks have been transformed into the striking new Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Gold, and the SpidoSpeed’s hardly what we’d call a sober old thing, is it?

The case of each one of the new SpidoSpeed Gold has been painstakingly hewn from one of these blocks; a feat not to be lightly thought of considering the complexity of working with this relatively soft metal to precisely extract the main elements of the skeletonised case, before being hand finished with satin and microbillé process which accentuates the angular family lines. Almost predictably when it’s a new Linde Werdelin instrument, the result is as dramatic visually as it is technically.

Straight out of the trade book of Formula 1 chassis construction where every possible element needs to be stripped back to the precise point where strength and rigidity are at their optimum, the DNA of the SpidoSpeed is in the artful mineralization of material (such as the harder titanium, anthracite and steel as previously used on other SpidoSpeed  editions) to spectacular effect, and in rose gold with black detail for contrast, it really is a natural progression which complements the collection perfectly.

For such a young watch company, Linde Werdelin have captured a lot of attention with their excellent digital media savvy approach, harnessing the power of the internet to achieve the greatest exposure for a heck of a lot less than many of their established counterparts spend on generic advertising. The brand just ooze cool, and their collections have matured into a range of highly desirable and instantly recognizable watches – many bigger companies would kill for an identity such as Linde Werdelin have patiently cultivated, but you know what they say? You can buy fashion, but you can’t buy style. Well, Linde Werdelin has natural style to spare!
