UAE, Ghana collaborate on nature-based solutions initiative
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ghana have announced a $30 million partnership aimed at supporting nature-based community development and climate solutions.
The agreement, signed by UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Dr. Amna Al Shamsi and Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel A. Jinapor, targets key investment areas such as biodiversity corridors, reforestation, and agroecology.
The partnership is part of Ghana’s “Resilient Ghana” nature-climate strategy and includes a focus on gender equality and youth engagement. Metrics for progress will be measured through Ghana’s REDD+ process, which tackles deforestation and emissions reductions.
Dr. Al Shamsi emphasised that the collaboration underscores the UAE’s commitment to reversing deforestation by 2030, as set out in the UAE Consensus signed at COP28.
Jinapor added that the investment would fill gaps in Ghana’s climate financing and provide essential support for livelihoods and ecosystem protection. This initiative is expected to be discussed further at COP29 in Baku and COP30 next year.
