UK to import electricity from Egypt solar farms

The United Kingdom (UK) is planning to import electricity from solar farms and wind turbines the sun-soaked landscapes of Egypt, according to an article published on Friday in the Daily Telegraph.

The plans will include the installation of subsea cables connecting Egypt to Europe, are due to be revealed at Rystad Energy’s EMEA Summit in London later this week, the statement added.

The £3.7 billion project is set to transmit energy generated by North African solar and wind farms, equivalent to 10GW, to Greece and the rest of Europe via a 965-kilometre cable.

Egypt was becoming an increasingly important source of electricity for all of Europe, said Carlos Diaz, director of renewables and power at Rystad, the energy research and business intelligence company hosting the summit.
