US congressional mission, Egypt’s FM discuss bilateral ties

Egypt’s foreign minister Sameh Shoukry discussed Egyptian-US ties with a visiting US congressional delegation in Cairo on Monday, Egypt’s state news agency MENA said.

The talks between Shoukry and the US congressmen, headed by Representative Michael Conaway, addressed “issues of mutual interests and recent development in the region and internationally,” including the civil conflicts in Libya and Syria as well as the fight against terrorism.

The congressional delegation also met with Egypt’s Minister of Defense Sedky Sobhi, where they discussed bilateral military relations.

Congressman Conaway is the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture in the US House of Representatives and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services.

Egypt is a key Middle East ally to Washington and is the second-largest recipient of US military aid after Israel, receiving 1.3 billion in annual assistance.
