12 killed, 7 injured in bus collision in Upper Egypt’s Minya

12 people were killed and seven others injured in a bus collision on a desert road in Minya governorate in Upper Egypt on Friday, Al-Ahram reported interior ministry officials as saying.

All those with major injuries were transferred to the General Bani Mazar hospital, the nearest to the site of the accident.

Egypt’s high rate of traffic accidents is often attributed to poorly maintained infrastructure and loosely enforced traffic regulations.

According to a Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) report in June 2017, the total number of accidents rose by 1.1 percent in 2016 to reach 14,710 accidents, resulting in 5,343 deaths, 18,646 injuries and 21,089 damaged vehicles.

The Ministry of Transportation has allocated 8 billion pounds over the last two years to develop 365 km of the country’s road network and add an opposite direction for 450 km of one-way roads.
