2011 Mohamed Mahmoud Pardon Fully Implemented: Prosecutor-General

Prosecutor-General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud issued a statement on Wednesday, saying President Mohamed Morsi’s 8 October pardon decree for the suspects in 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud clashes last year has been fully implemented.

The statement explained that implementing the presidential decree “supports the 25 January revolution.”

The prosecutor-general added that investigations into the killing of protesters are still taking place by the Ministry of Justice.

Following the October presidential decree, the prosecutor-general issued a decision on 5 November pardon. The decision acquitted all suspects detained during Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes that he previously had referred to the criminal court.

Mahmoud clarified that during last year’s clashes in Mohamed Mahmoud Street he carried out investigations as a consultant to the Ministry of Justice and referred 379 civil suspects to the criminal court.

After civil suspects were referred to the criminal court, Mahmoud said his office stopped overseeing the investigations.

Abdel-Meguid statement comes as protesters clash with police for the third straight day as peaceful rallies which started on Monday to commemorate the 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud clashes turned violent.

With over 40 protesters killed and hundreds of injured, the 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud clashes have been the deadliest incident since 28 January 2011, the bloodiest day in Egypt’s Tahrir Square uprising.
