50 Muslim Brotherhood NGOs disbanded in 5 governorates

Egypt’s minister of social solidarity on Tuesday issued a decision to disband 50 NGO’s in five governorates with links to the Muslim Brotherhood, a press statement issued by the ministry stated.

The minister, Ghada Wali, said that the disbanding of the NGOs came in accordance with a ruling from the Cairo Court for Urgent Matters to ban all the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood and to confiscate all the NGOs that are linked with the group.

The 50 NGOs currently operate in five governorates: 23 in Beheira, 14 in Fayoum, nine in Bani Suef, three in Gharbia and one in Cairo.

The minister also issued decisions to appoint a new board of directors for 27 NGOs in six governorates including Qena, North Sinai and Luxor so the activities of the organisations will continue to serve society in similar capacities.

This is considered the fourth batch of NGOs disbanded by the ministry of social solidarity since February 2015. So far, 420 NGOs have been disbanded by court rulings because of their association with the Muslim Brotherhood.

In November 2013 the Egyptian government designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation.
